“I feel connected to history when I sculpt him, (St. Francis) grounded in the moist mud.”

When Anne Marie lived in Germany in the 1980’s, she worked with an artisan, Gunther, who taught her the beauty of slab sculpting, which I do to this day.  Anne Marie started sculpting Santos out of stoneware about 20 years ago while working with an Old Town artisan in Albuquerque.  She made her first St. Francis for her father, who claimed the statue spoke to him.  Clay work started as a hobby and a meditation practice.

Each statue is unique and meaningful to Anne Marie.  The life of St. Francis, in particular, inspires Anne Marie.  He is the patron saint of Peace and Animals.

These Santos are in the style of the Colonial Spanish in New Mexico 1600s.  If you see something here that is not available at the on-line store, please give us a call or drop us and e-mail.  (505)847-1137 or lagaleriashaffer@gmail.com   Anne Marie is able to re-create another Santo.
